Successful Head Teachers chose to do “The Main Thing”
Successful Head teachers determine what the main thing is in their school work and leadership. Devote at least 90% of their time to doing the main thing. Concentrate on actions that will cause the school to grow.
The people you are working with, teachers and support staff, parents and students are the main thing in the school success. You have got to have good people skills.
Building teachers’ skills is particularly important. If you build teachers, teachers will build the school. You have potential to build a successful school. As a head teacher, stop focusing at problems. Focus at people skills. 15% of your success as a head teacher is professional knowledge and 85% of your success is people knowledge.
Motivating and inspiring your teachers is the main thing to do. Ability to work with your teachers. 85% of school leaders fail not because they lack skills or professional knowledge, but they fail because of personality. They cannot get along with people especially teachers.
Make people (teachers) feel good about themselves. John Lockfelow one of the richest men in America said “I will pay more for the ability to deal with people than any other ability under the son”. Zigzigler said, “You can get enough of what you want if you can help many people to get what they want”. John Maxell said,” The happiest people are those who have invested their time in helping others”. One of the greatest qualities of a head teacher as a leader is listening to the teachers. Support your teachers to achieve what they want to achieve.
The number one thing that a teacher, like other people craves for is recognition. People want recognition more than they want money. “Make me feel special”. “Make me feel different”. “Make me feel like a winner”. If you start making your teachers feel special they will start crowding around you and they will do a great job.
Concentrate on building teachers dreams. Recognize ability in teachers and bring it out. Every one on your team has ability. One may be lousy most of the time, but pick one positive thing and comment about it. Learn to sandwich criticism with praise. Words create emotions but actions create attitude. Treat your teachers well and make them feel special.
Remember teachers’ names. Stop saying I have a bad memory I cant remember you. People love the sound of their names. When you call them by names many times, you stop being a boss and subordinate, you become friends. Learn to make teachers your friends. People follow others not for who they are, but because of what they make them feel. Wherever you are be there, let teachers feel you care about them. When they know you don’t care, they don’t hang around you.
You will not build that school yourself alone, you will not cause that change you want in school performance on your own. Learn how to make health relationships with teachers. To win means doing what is Important Now. And what is important is the main thing, Try to know your teachers’ heart burn and work on their heart burn. Their heart burn is the reason why they joined the teaching service.
Get excited that you are part of this school leadership. Build your dream for the school and get excited about it before you get teachers excited about it, then get to the teachers and tell them and create enthusiasm among them. You can not build a successful school when you don’t have excited teachers. Total excitement is very critical in school success. Get everyone excited about every moment in the school.
Concentrate on building your teachers dreams. Nothing frustrates a head teacher like working with teachers who have no dreams. Do the best all the time no matter where you are. Do not get frustrated that you have been posted in a remote poor school. When Joseph was dumped in the jail he still did his best and he succeeded. He had a dream and even in the jail he cherished his dream. He was remained a winner. All the time he kept motivated and finally he became the second highest man in the entire nation. Don’t let go off your dream. Success is 90 % why you are doing what you do and only 10% how you do it.
Do you remember the sons of Israel in slavery? And Moses brought them out of slavery across the red sea. Then they saw the situation becoming even worse than how it was even in Egypt. They all complained against Moses. Moses told them, people, look behind. They looked behind and saw the Egyptians army following them. They had no option of going back, but to move forward. There is time when you look behind and you say there is zero option but to go forward with my work. No matter what challenges you face since you joined the teaching service, keep motivated and moving forward.
Do you understand your teachers; do you call them by name? 80% of your school good performance is produced by 20 % of the teachers you have. But do you know who the 20% are? Do you make them feel special? Your teachers will not follow you because of what you are, but because of what you make them feel.
If you make them feel special, they will remain obedient to you. When you don’t make them feel special they will say no to you. Do not be upset when teachers say no to your decisions. It means they have not bought your dream. Go ahead and sell your dream, doing the main thing. People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.
As a head teacher, move your army in the right direction with right actions. You move an army by making them feel special. Be the leader that you would want to follow. Inspire and motivate the teachers on your team, you will get amazed by the results of their work.
Alexander the great had only 5,000 men on his army. One day he met the enemy, King Darius who had 500,000,000 men on his army. How did Alexander win the battle? He assembled his Generals, the captains and the juniors; they planed the main thing together. He said let all the men assemble all the men. I want to talk to all the men. He sat on his white horse and put on his helmet and said. “What you see across, is king Darius with his army, he thinks he is going to destroy us, they don’t know how to fight, they don’t know how to hold the weapons, they don’t know anything.
But for you, are great fighters, you are trained men, you are strong men, you can not be defeated, you will not loose this battle”. You see them, they are all in this same line; I want you to do only one thing. We have to attack them from their weakest points and we are going to remember only 2 words “kill Darius”. They all became motivated to kill Darius. And they did kill him indeed. Alexander, worn the battle because he kept the main thing and he got his army excited with the main thing.
Your teachers want to keep excited about what you as their leader is going to do in their lives. Teachers want to know if you are sincere about your actions. Your excitement about your school dreams will make teachers believe and they will work.
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. The quality of school leadership, more than any other single factor, determines the success or failure of the school.
Leadership is, understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics, like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, implacability, as well as determination not to accept failure.
Lead and inspire people. Don’t try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead. A competent leader can get efficient service from poor troops, while on the contrary an incapable leader can demoralize the best troops. People are more easily led than driven.
